Website vs web app: what does your business need?

Start with what a person needs to do. A website helps them understand and act. An interactive tool helps them work something out. A web app gives them a place to return to a workflow.

The quickest way to choose.

If the main task is reading about your services and contacting you, begin with a business website. If visitors need a result from a few inputs, consider a calculator or guided tool. For a custom business workflow, discuss a focused web app. A login or a simple file-sharing portal can also be a scoped website add-on; complexity determines the price.

These are starting points for scoping, not rigid categories. A website can contain an interactive tool, and a web app often needs public pages that explain what it does.

Compare the three starting points.

Business websiteExplain the business and make contact easy.$1,500: up to five pages, responsive design, basic metadata and a contact or booking link.
Interactive websiteProduce a useful result from visitor inputs. From $2,500: the website package plus one defined calculator, selector or guided tool.
Focused web appSupport one repeated workflow with agreed roles and data. From $5,000: a bounded first version, with screens, permissions and integrations scoped before a quote.

These are Build & Handover starting prices. N+ Plus combines a lower build fee with prepaid ongoing management; compare the plans above. Additional features are quoted before work.

Three questions that change the scope.

1. Does the result need to be saved?

A calculator can often run without storing a visitor’s inputs. Saving results introduces decisions about where the data lives, how long it stays, who can access it and how someone returns to it. That can change both the initial build and ongoing care.

2. Do different people need different access?

A public page and a staff dashboard have different responsibilities. A customer portal needs clear boundaries between customers. Define who can create, read, update and delete each kind of information before choosing screens or features.

3. Does it connect to another system?

A booking link can be simple. A live connection that reads availability, writes records or takes payment needs a closer look at the existing system, account ownership and failure cases. List the integration before treating it as a small addition.

Think about the ongoing work, too.

A static service page still needs accurate information and maintained hosting. An app with accounts, a database or integrations may also need security updates, backup checks and support. Ask what is included at handover, what the owner will manage, and which work needs a separate care agreement.

Choose N+ Plus for ongoing management, including agreed hosting, domain, upkeep, backups, recovery and a content-update allowance. The first year is prepaid; afterward you may renew monthly at the full rate or annually at 10% off. Build & Handover includes 30 days of defect fixes, with future upkeep arranged separately.

When does an iOS app enter the picture?

An iOS app is a separate decision about how the workflow should work on a phone. Begin with the device capability or repeat use that improves the experience. A responsive website may already meet the need. A qualifying companion to an existing working web app is assessed separately; it is not an automatic wrapper or a promise of App Store approval.

A short brief is enough to start.

Describe the person using it, the task they need to complete, how the task works today and what a useful first version would change. Add any required accounts, saved data or integrations. If an existing product already does enough, say so; that is useful context for deciding whether a custom build makes sense.

You do not have to pick a technology or package before asking. We can help turn the problem into a scope you can review.
